ACES Round One

Irish eyes were smiling on the 136 riders that entered the first enduro of the 2010 Appalachian Championship Enduro Series as they were greeted with beautiful weather and great trail conditions.

The Chillicothe Enduro Riders fought the elements and dealt with record snows leading up to the event. Just two weeks prior to the enduro, organizers were still dealing with ice and snow on the north sides of the slopes. However, Mother Nature showed her kinder side in the days leading up to the event and many commented that the trails seemed more like autumn in Ohio than spring.

KTM/SCR's Josh Gaitten, fresh from good finishes in the first three National Enduros, proved to be at the top of his game as he took a 10 second lead over Husaberg mounted Robbie Jenks at the second check and never looked back. Jenks has also been recording some top finishes at the National Enduros, as Mike Lafferty's mechanic!

At day's end, Gaitten bested Jenks by 3 points with Wheelsports' Trevor Kline another point back on his KTM. Jenks commented that he wasn't up to Gaitten's speed today and found himself just missing the "flip" a couple times.

Carey Eberts piloted his 200 KTM to the Overall A win with a score of 12. Kevin Brown returned to the Sr. A class after a year off and picked up where he left off, winning the class and finishing 10th overall

In the B ranks, John Yerkey picked up the Overall award, dropping 19 points and besting Grant Smith on the emergencies by 69 seconds. This may shape up to be an interesting battle since Yerkey is a part of the northeast Ohio posse that includes, among others, last year's B champion Mike VanCise and S.Sr. stalwart Mark Lederle; while Grant is paired up with 09 and multi-time champion Robbie Jenks.

ACES round 2 is the ACES benefit on April 11th at the Athens Motorcycle club and will be a traditional enduro with proceeds going toward your year-end awards banquet. ACES would like to thank the following sponsors: Osburn's Signs, Kenda, MSR, Rocky, Enduro Engineering, Appalachian Off Road Cycles, Beaver Creek Cycles, Ohio Motorcycle and Sport Cycles.
